Have you ever thought about learning to meditate? If the answer is yes, then we will share a few important things that you should know before you start.

What Should You Know Before You Begin to Meditate?

As a beginner, you should know that meditation is an ancestral technique that originated mainly in the East and that today is practiced by millions of people worldwide.

There are more and more people interested in this practice each day, whether it is to regulate the body and the mind, to relax, or to find oneself. With that said, starting to meditate is not an easy task: this is a technique that takes time and patience.

The Step by Step to Learn How to Meditate

Finding the best time for you, the type of meditation that you will carry out, and the ideal posture are key to developing the habit of meditating on a daily basis. When you start, you can try different techniques and postures, and choose the one that you feel most comfortable in, both physically and mentally.

Once this is clear to you, we recommend the following:

Choose comfortable clothes: wear clothes that you feel comfortable in, and take off your shoes. If necessary, you can also take off your watch, bracelets, or rings.

What matters most is that you feel comfortable centering in the here and now.

Find a quiet spot: this will be your space of connection. It can be your favorite room, the balcony, the patio, or the terrace. Place your focus on finding a place without distractions where you can tap into your practice.

Focus on your breath: as you are beginning with your meditation practice, close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Inhale and exhale so that your body and mind are in tune with each other.

Accept the thoughts that arise: accept all the thoughts that come to mind because it is normal that they emerge; that is what meditation is about, accepting thoughts and emotions to reach a state of psychological wellbeing.

Increase the time you dedicate to meditating: start little by little and then increase the duration of your meditations. You can begin by meditating a few minutes per day and then gradually make your meditations longer as you begin to feel comfortable.

Include meditation in your day-to-day: as you practice, include meditation in your daily routine. Little by little you will improve until you master the technique.

Techniques for Beginners

There are a wide variety of meditation techniques that will help you to focus and expand the potential of this exercise. Specialists recommend practicing different techniques according to what you are experiencing when you meditate since you can tailor your practice to target different objectives.

Below, we share some of these techniques with you:

Mindfulness: one of the most popular techniques nowadays and in the West. It is centered on paying attention to the thoughts that go through our minds, observing them without judging, and allowing them to pass by without stopping them.

Mantras: this technique consists of emitting sounds, they may be words, a phrase, or sounds that don't carry a specific meaning. Mantra meditation is one of the easiest since when you emit sounds, you center all of your attention on them and the mind is not distracted by other thoughts.

Movement: one of the most famous is Yoga; but, a good place to start with this technique is to meditate while you walk. Concentrate on your breathing and on the movement of each one of your muscles and you will notice the connection.

Visualization: is about conjuring mental images of objects, places, or people that bring us peace and calm. These are representations of our mind that we can create while playing with our senses.
